RIDING EXPERIENCE GUIDE

Do you need riding experience to try polo? It depends on the exact session.

Separate being new to polo from being new to riding. That one detail prevents many unsuitable enquiries and makes provider confirmation easier.

The short answer

Not every introductory polo format has the same riding requirement. Some routes may accept someone with no riding experience, while others are designed for riders who are new to polo but already comfortable on a horse.

Never rely on “beginner” alone

Ask the provider to confirm that the session fits your exact riding history before booking.

Describe your riding level clearly

  • No experience: you have never ridden, or only sat on a horse briefly.
  • A little experience: you have taken a few lessons but do not ride regularly.
  • Confident rider: you can independently control a horse at the paces relevant to the provider’s lesson.

For a group, describe the least experienced participant as well as the most experienced one.

Questions to ask the provider

  1. Does this exact session accept a first-time rider?
  2. Is any separate riding assessment or introductory riding lesson required?
  3. What safety equipment is provided?
  4. How is the pony selected for the participant?
  5. What should the participant wear and bring?

How PoloSolo uses your answer

Riding experience is one of the strongest matching inputs. A format that does not list your level as potentially suitable is deprioritised, and your answer is included in the enquiry for provider confirmation.

The match is a starting recommendation, not a safety assessment or a booking guarantee.
