The useful starting point
Use measurements to review fit and a style–colour–size matrix to plan quantities. An adult medium, a junior medium and an age label are separate references until the agreed chart connects them.
Use the stated measurement method
Ask whether the breeches chart records body measurements or finished garment measurements. Confirm the points used for waist, hip, rise and inseam, the unit, and whether the garment is measured relaxed or stretched. Do not convert UK, US, age or letter labels without the chart for the selected reference. The chart should identify its version so a later revision is visible.
For gloves, request the hand-circumference and hand-length method used for that style and confirm how sizes are labelled. Keep junior and adult ranges separate, even where a label looks identical. Review finger proportions and cuff fit in samples. A size matrix allocates quantities; it cannot establish whether a product fits.
Build a style, colour and size quantity matrix
Create a row for every combination of reference, fit and colour. Use one column for each size in that reference's confirmed chart. Write the order unit in the heading: breeches are counted as garments, while the glove brief should specify pairs. Mark a quantity as estimated if the member list, sales plan or budget is still being reviewed.
The example below uses placeholder size names, not a PoloSolo size chart. Each colour totals 60 pairs and the complete plan totals 120 pairs. An even or uneven split is a planning choice based on your customers; neither this total nor a cell quantity represents a supplier minimum or recommended assortment.
- Check row totals, size-column totals and the overall total independently.
- Keep BREECH-01, BREECH-02 and BREECH-03 on separate lines with their own charts.
- Separate junior glove quantities from adult quantities for GLOVE-01 or GLOVE-02.
- Ask whether a minimum applies per style, colour, size or decoration; do not infer it from the total.
Swipe or scroll the table to view every column.
| Style / colour | Size A | Size B | Size C | Size D | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adult glove / black | 10 | 20 | 20 | 10 | 60 pairs |
| Adult glove / white | 15 | 15 | 20 | 10 | 60 pairs |
| Size totals | 25 | 35 | 40 | 20 | 120 pairs |
Choose the size set to review
A single sample can support a material or construction discussion but cannot show the fit of every size. Agree which sizes will be reviewed, who will review them and which measurement points will be checked. If both junior and adult fits are in the collection, include a separate review plan for each. Ask about the availability, cost and timing of that sample scope.
For breeches, record feedback on rise, waist, leg length, seams and the proposed grip placement. For gloves, separate finger length, palm fit, cuff closure and rein-contact observations. Keep artwork feedback distinct from fit feedback so a correct logo does not obscure an unresolved fit change. Approve the revised chart and relevant sample record before confirming the production specification.
Keep size identifiers consistent through packing and reorders
Use the same reference, colour name and size label in the quote, matrix, product label and packing list. If your store uses different retail names or SKUs, create a mapping rather than silently changing the supplier reference. Ask how cartons will identify the size mix and how your team can check the received quantities.
Save the final matrix alongside the chart version, approved sample, artwork and packing specification. For a reorder, copy the record and show the new quantities explicitly. If the fabric, pattern or size grading changes, ask which fit and sample checks must be repeated. The previous size label alone is not a reliable record of the previous specification.
