Lisbon · first trip decision
Your first 24 hours alone in Lisbon.
Choose the airport route by the time you can actually leave the terminal, confirm the door you are checking into, keep the first night small and orient yourself in daylight.
Before landing
- Save the exact accommodation entrance offline.
- Confirm who can admit you at the time you expect to arrive.
- Save one licensed ride fallback even if you plan to use the Metro.
06:30–22:00
The airport Metro is usually the simplest starting point. Aeroporto–Saldanha takes about 20 minutes; inspect the final street and any interchange before committing.
22:00–01:00
Use the Metro only with a comfortable margin after baggage and immigration. A heavy bag, steep last walk or tight station-closing margin can make a licensed door-to-door ride the lower-friction choice.
After 01:00
Use the official taxi rank or an app-booked TVDE pickup at P2, Level 2, arrivals. Do not accept an unsolicited terminal approach.
First-night rule
Check in, eat close to the stay or use a preselected backup, tell one person you arrived, and leave sightseeing for daylight. The goal is a clean handoff, not a full evening.
Take it offline
Print the airport decision, not the whole guide.
Keep the Metro hours, licensed pickup choices and first-night rule on one clean page.
PoloSolo Arrival Friction Index
Rate the handoffs, not the city.
This qualitative index describes logistics, not personal safety. It is based on time margin, luggage, final-street difficulty and whether the stay can receive you.
More operating margin and a predictable handoff at the stay.
The closing-time margin and final 500 metres can create more friction than the train itself.
Door-to-door reduces transfers, but pickup point, meter/app and reception must still be confirmed.
Resolve the transport or accommodation handoff before leaving the terminal.
The next morning
Build confidence in daylight.
Start with a simple route through Baixa and Chiado or another easy reference point near your stay. Check transport notices, buy only the ticket you need and keep the afternoon movable.

Official tourism describes Alfama as steep and cobbled. Recheck the route without assuming a short map distance means an easy walk.
